During the months of December through May, teams (of about 12 students) read books from the Reading Olympics list. The teams meet with their coaches during their lunch period about once every two weeks (“eat and meet”). The coaches make sure that every book from the Reading Olympics list has been read by at least two team members. Students complete a “bookcard” after they have finished reading a book. We have two practice sessions, which we call our Mock Olympics. Then, one evening in May, teams from all over Chester County come together and the different teams compete - answering questions about the books they have read. There are three rounds and then an awards ceremony – each participant receives a ribbon.
We will have four teams this year – two 5th grade teams participating in the elementary event and two 6th grade teams participating in the middle school event, both in May.
