The Instructional Support Team focuses on children who may be struggling academically and/or behaviorally. The team consists of any staff member who works with the student, including Reading teachers and ESL teachers, etc. That student can be referred to IST by a staff member or by a parent. The purpose of IST is to define exactly what the student's needs are and how to best address them. Interventions that are currently being carried out by the classroom teacher are reviewed. Interventions may include: presenting material in a different manner that may be better suited to the student's learning style, providing educational tools to use in the classroom (ex. manipulatives, reading tracker), or working with the teacher in a small group. The team then discusses and chooses additional interventions/strategies that may benefit the student in their area of need. Data is collected data for 30 school days to determine if the new interventions are helping the student to make progress. At that point the existing interventions may continue, additional interventions may be initiated, or if little to no progress is being made the parent and the IST members will meet to discuss remaining options.
As the IST teacher my role is to support your child, the teacher, and you in any way that I can. Many times I work individually or in a small group with students to reteach, reinforce, or review what their classroom is doing or in whatever area of need they have.
As a parent/guardian you are a vital member of this process. While your child's teacher and IST will keep you updated on his/her status and progress you are certainly invited to contact your child's teacher or me with any questions or concerns.
In addition, if you are concerned that your child may need to be evaluated due to learning concerns contact me and I can explain the process to you and begin the necessary paperwork.
