Hopewell brings home the blue at Reading Olympics

Hopewell teams earn blue ribbons at Chester County Reading Olympics

Four Hopewell Elementary School teams recently participated in the 2019 Chester County Reading Olympics and earned blue ribbons, indicating the highest scoring range.

Taking home blue ribbons at the middle school competition held on March 19 at the Chester County Technical College High School Brandywine Campus were the sixth grade “Reluctant Terrestrial Juice Bug Surfers,” coached by teacher Amy Swisher, and the “Elite Bookworms,” coached by librarian Maureen Pongracz.

Earning blue ribbons at the elementary school completion held on May 7 at TCHS Brandywine were the fifth grade “Hopewell Lightning Readers,” coached by teacher Ronni Darragh, and the “Hopewell Bibliophiles,” coached by teacher Amy Gollatz.

Sponsored by the Chester County Intermediate Unit, the goal of the Reading Olympics is to increase the time students spend reading independently for enjoyment while developing their reading skills. Beginning in December, students collaborate with their teammates to read 45 books selected by a committee of librarians, reading specialists, and classroom teachers in the Philadelphia area. The committee prepares questions based on the selected books for the Reading Olympics participants to answer during the three rounds of competition.
